November 11, 2018 – Divine Dolphin Tour Log

We weren’t really expecting to see whales today, but we did within minutes of our tour starting! Mom and Baby Humpbacks are here late in the season for our Southern Migration and we found them close to the coast, chilling out and not really going anywhere.

How do I know they are our outgoing Southerns and not the incoming Northerns? The South American Humpbacks have white on both sides of their long pectoral fins and our North American Humpbacks have white on the underside and are much darker on the upper side. Today’s whales both had very white pec fins, so we know they are just waiting for baby to get big enough to swim the 5,000 miles to the breeding grounds in Chile and Antarctica.

We saw some Spotted Dolphins too, but not like we usually do as there was a lot of red tide close to shore in some areas. I felt them much further out today. It was a great day and I am glad to be back out where it feels like HOME! ???
