Take the Divine Dolphin’s world famous Dolphin and Whale Watching Tour from any hotel in the Drake Bay area!
When you reserve our dolphin and whale watching tour directly with us, you are assured to be on Drake Bay’s original pelagic tour with our passionate and qualified guides, our custom-made tour boats, our on-board hydrophone to hear the dolphins and whales, and our 26 years of experience in Drake Bay, Costa Rica. This is the only tour we do, it is our specialty!
Large resident pods of dolphins make it possible to see dolphins all throughout the year. We most commonly see Spotted Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Spinner Dolphins, Common Dolphins and Roughtooth Dolphins. Other species of dolphins also make their appearance from time to time.
The very best time to see Humpback Whales is with our Southern migration, between mid July through October. Our Northern migration Humpback Whales can be seen mid-November through April.
Weather wise, for both dolphins and whales, the best times are mid-December through mid-April and July through September. The Green Season (April-December) does not necessarily mean it rains all day. It usually means late afternoon showers, and of course, some days have more rain than others. We rarely have to cancel tours for the weather as our boat is secure and stable and the storms pass quickly.
Every day is different and no two tours are alike. Sometimes we find dolphins and/or whales close to shore. Other times we travel many miles offshore (known as the pelagic area) to see the mega pods of dolphins that can number in pods of thousands. It all depends on what we see along the way and the state of the ocean and weather.
On rougher days, we usually stay closer in, but this is no problem because we have over two thousand Pantropical Spotted Dolphins, whom we call our Homeboys. that hang close to the coast. Sometimes they are spread out wide in smaller sub-pods, and sometimes they all join together into a mega pod.
During prime whale season, which is late July through October, we mostly focus on the Humpback Whales who stay close to shore or around Caño Island. Don’t worry, dolphin lovers, the dolphins are always around and many times they hang out and play with the whales, especially the babies.
We cannot control the behaviors of the dolphins and whales and certainly they are more social and friendly on some days and less so on others. Sometimes the dolphins are playful and super friendly and some days they are quietly resting, although they usually still let us hang out with them. Some Humpback moms bring their new babies over to the boat. Other moms, usually the new moms, are a little more protective of their babies.
Whichever mood the dolphins and whales are in, we respect them and never force them to interact with us. The very best interactions are when the dolphins and whales choose us!
